About Katya Borg Galea
I am a registered Educational Psychologist with a Master’s Degree from the University of Malta. As an Educational Psychologist, I carry out psycho-educational assessments, intervention, and follow-up for children and adolescents aged 2-18 years. In my practice, I assess for various profiles including Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), Specific Learning Difficulties/Dyslexia, Intellectual Disability, Attention-Deficit-Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), and other learning, behavioural and/or developmental difficulties.
What do Educational Psychologists do?
Educational psychologists are specialised in how humans learn and how different cognitive, behavioural, emotional, and social factors affect the learning process. Educational psychology practice is informed by research in the field of mental health, learning, and behaviour; thus, educational psychologists use theory in these areas to support children and youth academically, socially, behaviourally, and emotionally.

Educational psychologists collaborate closely with families, teachers, Learning Support Educators, School Leadership Teams, and other professionals to create contexts that promote a safe, healthy environment that facilitates learning. They are trained in carrying out interviews, psychometric testing, observations, and other assessments to understand the psycho-educational profile of the child. School psychologists provide direct interventions to students, and offer consultation, advice, and support to teachers, parents, and other professionals so that learners can be supported to reach their full potential.
Why might my child need an Educational Psychologist?
All children and youth can experience challenges that can affect their learning. These can be related to a variety of factors such as their cognitive or literacy skills, social relationships, ability to manage emotions, ability to sustain their attention, etc. School psychologists help students, families, educators, and members of the community understand and address the diverse learning needs that children and adolescents present with so they can be included and thrive in the different communities they form part of.
